Climate and Temperature At Hampta Pass

04

November to April

It is not advised to go on the Hampta Pass Trek at this time. The path is inaccessible due to extreme cold, thick snowfall, and obstructed trails. The temperature ranges from 11°C to 16°C during the day and from -4°C to 2°C at night. At higher elevations, it stays below 0°C all the time.
05

May to June

This is the best time for Hampta pass trek as there is still some snow, especially near Balu Ka Ghera and Hampta Pass. However, the Chandratal Lake is not reachable until late June. You can expect daytime temperatures of 21°C to 25°C and night-time temperatures of 2°C to -5°C. This time of year is great for snow adventures without being too cold.
06

July to August

If you like plants and flowers, July through August is the best time for Hampta pass trek. The Manali section during this time gets hit by monsoon rain, however Spiti and Lahaul stay mostly dry. The temperature stays nice between 15°C and 20°C during the day, but drops to 1°C to 5°C at night. Although the trails are wet, the valley is full of abundant greenery, marigolds, and blue poppies.
07

September to October

The best time to do Hampta pass trek is probably September to October. During this season, you can see Chandratal Lake clearly and enjoy the beautiful fall colours. The daytime temperature is between 15°C and 23°C, and the nighttime temperature is between 0°C and -2°C. Early snowfall and freezing temperatures happen in late October therefore plan accordingly.

Crowd Levels & Booking Tip by Month

08

June

  • Plan your walk at least a month ahead of time, to avoid making last-minute changes since sites, permits, and trained guides get booked quickly.
  • Choose customizable packages that let you stay in private tents and give you the flexibility to leave at your convenience.
  • Make sure you book your transport to and from Chhatru and Jobra early, because shared cars fill up quickly at this time.

09

July to August

  • Expect minimal crowds, but make reservations as soon as possible because plans may get disrupted by strong monsoon near Manali.
  • Book at least two to three weeks in advance for a smooth trip with trusted local guides who can help you select safe trails.
  • Choose a package that includes rainproof gear, ponchos, and allows flexible times for trekking.

10

September

Book your campsite and Chandratal permits well in advance.
  • Book early for Chandratal and campsite permits as evenings are colder and route access is limited even with fewer trekkers.
  • Make sure you have sufficient cold-weather gear and that you book guides ahead of time to avoid problems at the last minute.
  • Choose excursions that begin early in the month to take advantage of better weather.
  • Book early pickups for your own vehicles because shared transport options drop sharply in September.

Travel & Gear Tips for Each Season

11

June–July

  • Put on waterproof trekking boots to navigate sloppy, snow-covered trails.

  • Bring snow gaiters with you to keep snow out of your shoes.

  • Bring warm clothes for cold nights, especially for your ascent after Balu Ka Ghera.

  • Wear clothes that dry quickly to stay warm when crossing snow.

  • Put on wool and down jackets to keep yourself warm.

12

July–August

  • Bring a good umbrella or rain jacket with you to stay dry.
  • Remember to bring extra socks to change into after hiking on wet trails.
  • Use trekking poles to maintain your balance on muddy, slippery paths.
  • Put a rain cover on your backpack to keep it dry.
  • Wear moisture-wicking clothing to stay warm after a rainstorm.

13

September

  • Dress in layers to keep warm or cool as the weather changes.
  • Dress for cold nights with wool jackets and a light down jacket.
  • Bring sunglasses with UV protection to protect your eyes from UV rays.
  • Keep a lightweight, windproof jacket with you for cold mornings.
  • Wear gloves and a woollen hat in the high altitude sections of the Pass.

14

Pro Tips from Experts & Local Guides

  • Always cross streams before noon when water levels are low because afternoon snow melt increases river volume and makes crossings dangerous.
  • Drink four to five litres of water daily in colder months to prevent dehydration and reduce your chances of altitude sickness on high camps.
  • Take it slow at Balu Ka Ghera and avoid heavy activity to allow your body proper time to adjust before the Hampta Pass ascent.
  • Carry Diamox only after consulting your doctor or trek leader since incorrect use can mask symptoms and delay urgent treatment for altitude sickness.
  • Plan your hike for the beginning of September for the best weather, fewer people, and guaranteed entry to Chandratal Lake with clear trails and views.
  • Take your trek leader's advice on speed, changes in the weather, or delays as their real-time knowledge keeps everyone safe in the mountains, where conditions can change quickly.

The work from home seemed quite relaxing until I started to feel trapped. Thus, come 2021, and kept on looking for a workstation trip where I could stay amidst nature and still work. On came Thrillophilia as a genie and arranged the most fabulous stay in Manali. The three-bedroom cottage I was staying in could accommodate nine people and I set off with 4 of my friends. We loved the serene Kullu Valley setting but met our office targets with full gusto. The stay was not just beautiful being situated amidst apple orchards but was a sanitized space with staff performing hygiene checks daily. My friends made the most of the indoor workspaces while I brought about the outdoor furniture to do office work while not missing out on nature’s grandeur. Totally loved how Thrillophilia at such short notice, arranged for a homestay that had Wi-Fi connectivity, power backup and a laptop-friendly workspace. I still miss our evenings where we would gorge on local snacks cooked in the kitchen, by a chef using fresh seasonal produce. If WFM has been a mood dampener for you, give Thrillophilia a try, to arrange a nourishing stay in the hills!

Hello everyone, the round trek was breathtaking. But the experience became amazing only because of our guide - Rahul. Rahul helped me to conquer my fear of heights. He kept on motivating me to go further and also helped me to come down by constantly holding my hand. I went with 3 of my friends and we all loved the service and we made many new friends as well in the group :) And that’s why I will recommend thrillophilla to everyone. And As far as the stay is concerned, it is comfortable and cosy and the vibe is surreal.

I booked this trek at the end of Feb 2021. The weather was somewhat pleasant and a lot windy. The trekking company just started its operations in Leta village after camping in triund got prohibited due to which the washroom situation was not the best. However, the tents were good and the owner was also very accommodating, providing extra sleeping bags to overcome the cold. Our guide was amazing and very supportive throughout the trek. We went till snowline due to time and safety concerns. The food and bonfire were also very good. Overall an amazing experience.
