Best time for Manali to Spiti Valley Trip

Send Enquiry
The best time to visit Spiti from Manali, and also when the route is entirely open, is between mid-May to October. The route via Manali, going through Rohtang Pass, Batal and Kunzum Pass is free of snow during these months. Especially in September, Himachal Pradesh is void of snow as well as rain, owing to which roads are dry and not muddy.

Water crossings too are relatively calm. Towards mid-October it begins to snow making travel difficult. Following this, the route is entirely shut from November to April on account of heavy snowfall and fierce water crossings. Hotels close down too because temperatures fall as low as -30°C and water pipes remain frozen till winter recedes.

Manali to Spiti Valley Road Condition

The 200 km stretch from Manali to Spiti is as adventurous as it is scenic. Between Manali to Rohtang Pass the road is muddy and raw with major chances of landslides and slush, especially in the monsoon. Through May - July the snow melts leading to muddy puddles and water streams that you need to cross over.

Through September - October, the road is repaired by the Border Road Organization and gets much better, however it is still prone to dry-rock landslides and boulders. From Rohtang to Batal and Losar the road gets better with a few cracks and water crossings. Between Losar and Kunzum Pass the road is terrible, but gets better from Kunzum to Chandratal.

Although very narrow, allowing only one car to pass at a time, the rocky road is slightly smoother than other patches. Following that, from Chandratal to Kaza the road is very bad passing through big streams and boulders that may even lead to journey delays. Once in Kaza, prepare for a smooth journey through the Spiti Valley.

Between May-August the route is also very foggy, making driving difficult. It is best to travel between September and October to experience smoother roads and clear weather.

Information About AMS and Acclimatisation

Send Enquiry
As is known, when the altitude increases, especially above 8000 feet, the barometric pressure of a place decreases, which means oxygen levels in the body start reducing. One needs to breathe more to fulfil the oxygen requirement in the body. When you spend enough time at the same altitude, your body begins to adjust to the oxygen intake which is called acclimatisation.

However, if the body fails to do this, it is referred to as Acute Mountain Sickness which is a serious medical condition where the body isn’t receiving enough oxygen. As you ascend faster and higher, the risk of AMS increases because there isn’t enough time for acclimatisation. AMS generally occurs when you cross 10,000 feet.

Remember, if you are short of breath, do not try to sleep as respiration reduces while sleeping which will worsen the condition. The best cure is to acclimate yourself or descend. In case of minor AMS, you can consume tablets that reduce headaches and nausea, but make sure these are prescribed by a professional. Some might also have side effects, so do not consume anything without a prescription.

The best way to gauge the level of AMS is by asking the patient to walk in a straight line. If he is unable to do so, the necessary medical aid should be provided instantly, or he/she should be brought down from the height.

But while the area of Spiti Valley is safe, the road leading up to it certain isn’t. The route is carved through the mountains and you’ll often come across boulders and water crossings turned to streams. Pros: • The bikes were in good condition, and there were regular breaks for riders. • The trip guide was excellent and very clear with instructions. • They selected excellent viewpoints and regular stops. All the pre-decided places were duly shown to us. Cons • The food could have been improved • The internet connectivity throughout was very poor.
