Safety Tips & Guidelines

Send Enquiry
First and foremost, Spiti should not be your first driving or riding trip. Since the distances are huge and the roads uneven, you need experience and the patience that comes with it to manage this trip.

Avoid taking undue risks like over speeding while driving. Don’t consume alcohol while driving. Never drive when you are fatigued or try dangerous stunts on these precarious roads.

You should know your vehicle in and out. Keep a check on its fuel efficiency, performance on bad roads, condition of its parts, weights that it can take, etc. Keep spares handy.

Learn the techniques of manoeuvring your vehicles in slushy mud or at the time of landslides, especially as you cross Kaza. This is where bringing an SUV will help.

Getting to know the route also goes a long way in having a fun trip with minimal risks. There is ample information on the Internet about where you will tend to run into bad road patches. This will help you in managing your vehicle and time.

Keep a check on fuel stations, ATMs and hospitals on the way. Always carry ample liquid cash, as the ATMs tend to work as per the weather.

Keep a couple of buffer days to make up for any delays due to bad roads or weather conditions.

Double-check your ‘To-carry’ list of clothing, water, medicines, and other essentials.

Reach Spiti via the Shimla route. This will greatly help you in acclimatising to the altitude and minimising the chances of AMS.

AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) and Acclimatisation

Send Enquiry
AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) is a very real concern while traveling in the mountains. It is that condition, which is caused by low oxygen levels found in high altitude areas. It causes a variety of effects on one’s body ranging from physical to those related to the brain like:

Dizziness
Confusion
Severe headache
Nausea
Constant vomiting
Increased heart rate
Breathlessness
Reduced or lost appetite

These symptoms usually go away on their own. However, they aggravate in case you gain altitude too quickly and if your general physical health is not too good. If left untreated, they can quickly become life-threatening. Fortunately, the Shimla-Spiti route allows one to gradually Acclimatized. You can adapt easily on this route as the daily altitudinal gains are minimal.

Still, if you feel any of the above-mentioned symptoms, make sure to let your body acclimatize by:

Slowly gaining altitude during your trip. In case you experience any symptoms, stay in the same location at the same altitude or descend immediately.

Keep a check on yourself and recognize if you are getting any of the AMS symptoms.

Avoid consuming alcohol and smoking during the trip. This adds on to the probability of getting AMS.

In case you feel any of the symptoms, get proper sleep. Sleep with a pillow rather than on a flat surface. It is best to sleep in an upright position.

Avoid using the car heater. This makes the body temperature fluctuates as you step in and out of the car.

Keep yourself hydrated. Avoid carbonated drinks and caffeine.

Keep your pace slow while walking and don’t exert yourself too much.

Use medicines like Diamox to reduce the initial impacts of AMS. However, Diamox should be taken sparingly and only after consulting a doctor.

Try things like the essential oil of lavender & peppermint to soothe your headache and nausea.

Keep some fresh cloves and garlic with you. Chewing on them helps in reducing the feeling of nausea and breathlessness.

People Also Ask About Spiti Valley

  1. Which are the best places to visit in Nako?

There are several beautiful places to visit in Nako- a lush, green, beautiful village located in Himachal Pradesh.

    1. Nako lake
    2. Nako monastery
    3. Nako Gompa
    4. Lipa- Asrang Sanctuary
  2. Which are the best places to visit in Kaza?

Here are some of the best places to visit in Kaza:
  3. Which route is better Manali to Spiti Valley or Shimla to Spiti Valley?

Approaching Spiti from Shimla side is considered to be a much better option as compared to the Manali route. On the Shimla route, the ascent is gradual, which allows you to be AMS-acclimatised properly. Not only this route is open throughout the year, but also you can avoid the tourist crowd of Rohtang Pass and permits for crossing Rohtang Pass.

Both these routes are generally compared based on:

    - Route availability: The Manali-Kaza route is available for a shorter window during the year i.e. only between June-October. However, the Shimal-Kaza route is open throughout the year due to the absence of high mountain passes. So in case you want to explore Spiti during the off-tourist months of early summer and peak winters, the Shimla-Kaza route is preferable.

    - Availability of time: In case you are pressed for time and want to make a quick escape to Spiti, you should opt for the Manali-Kaza route. This would take around 7-8 hours. However, if it is a longer trip and you intend to leisurely soak in the beauty of the place, opt for the Shimla-Kaza route. This takes around 2-3 days. This route also saves time that is spent is getting the Rohtang Pass permits.

    - Acclimatization: There is a quick ascent of around 2000 metres each day on the Manali-Kaza route. On the other hand, the Shimla-Kaza route allows for the gradual ascent that is spread over more days, letting you get used to the high altitudes.
  4. How can I reach Lahaul Spiti from Shimla?

There are a number of ways in which you can reach Lahaul Spiti from Shimla- bus, cabs, or self-drive. Opt for buses plying regularly between Shimla and Lahaul Spiti via Hindustan Tibet Highway. Choose between the buses plying during the day or overnight buses that are also available. There are many state-run and private buses to choose from. Else, opt to self-drive or take a shared cab.
  5. How far is Lahaul Spiti from Chandigarh?

Lahaul Spiti is at a distance of around 217 kilometres from Chandigarh. The best route to take is the one from Shimla-Narkanda-Nako-Spiti.
  6. Can kids go to Spiti Valley?

Spiti is located at an altitude of around 12,500 ft with rarefied and dry air. These factors tend to cause AMS, breathlessness, fatigue in people and have a greater impact on kids, especially those who are very young. You should avoid taking children younger than 2 years of age. Not only are the lungs not very well developed at this age, but they are also unable to express any discomfort. When you decide to travel with your kids, make sure to keep an eye on them and take any physical discomfort and changes in behaviour like irritability, confusion, and loss of appetite.
  7. How many days is enough for Spiti Valley?

8 days are enough to see almost all the spectacular wonders of Spiti Valley, which include:

    1. Kaza-Ki-Kibber
    2. Tabo Village
    3. Dhankar Village & Lake
    4. Mud Village
    5. Komic Village
    6. Pin Valley National Park
    7. Hikkim
    8. Langza
    9. Chandratal Lake

  8. Which car is best for Spiti Valley?

A 4X4 SUV serves the best on these roads and the surprises that they sometimes throw up. If that’s not an option, a 2X4 SUV will also suffice. We are recommending SUV due to their ground clearance that will help you steer over potholes and damaged roads, steep ascents, and water streams. They are great for manoeuvring through muddy slush, which is common during the monsoons.
  9. Is there a network in Spiti Valley?

The two connections that work in Spiti are BSNL and MTNL. Till Tabo, the connectivity is quite smooth. As you cross Tabo, places like Pin Valley, Mane Village, Dhankar, etc. the connectivity starts breaking. It gets better the moment you reach Kaza. As you proceed towards Komic and Kibber, the BSNL and MTNL connectivity becomes intermittent again. It works well near Key Monastery, Kunzum Pass and Rangrik Village.

As for data connectivity, you will be limited to GPRS/2G. Some hotels and cafes offer WiFi, which is quite slow. The connectivity depends upon the weather largely, which affects the mobile towers and availability of electricity.
