Park Guell's Original Purpose

Park Guell was originally meant to be a housing project with the best-in-class facilities. Located on the top of Carmel Hill, the park offers unparalleled views of the town. Designer Antoni Gaudí along with his patron Eusebi Guell, managed to get a contract for building 60 plots in the area.

However, they couldn't attract enough investors because of many challenges like lack of transport and lease contracts. After Antoni passed away in 1914, Guell had to discard the project. Later, in 1926, the area was transformed and opened as a public park. Today, visitors can explore this unique attraction by securing Park Guell Tickets.

The Park Was Gaudí’s Residence

In 1906, Antoni Gaudí purchased the model house in the park to stay there with his niece and father. He chose to stay in Park Guell so that he could proactively look after the construction. Some lesser-known facts about Park Guell state that the popular 'Gaudi House Museum' wasn't designed by Antoni.

Francesc Berenguer had designed the museum, and Gaudi was just responsible for signing the plans. This was because back in the day, Francesc had not earned a reputation for being a qualified architect.

Gaudi also included water storage and collection systems that worked on the principles of irrigation models. You can also observe how the park's architecture features slanted lines and curves, instead of straight lines.

Named After Gaudi's Patron

Visitors can't help but wonder why the park was named 'Guell' and not 'Gaudi'. The reason why it's that way is because Antoni Gaudi wanted to name the park after his friend and patron Eusebi Güell. You'd be amazed to know that Park Guell isn't the only place that was named after Eusebi.

Antoni also named many other monuments after Guell, some of them include Palau Güell and Colonia Güell. Moreover, locals also believe that Antoni Gaudi was too modest to use his name for his creations.

Construction Duration of The Park

Eusebi Guell commissioned Antoni to design plans for developing a lavish property on the hill in 1900. Antoni planned to build a top-class residential area that features the best-in-class amenities. By 1903, steps, viaducts, two entrance pavilions, and an outer enclosure were completed.

By this time, plots had started selling and the first one was bought by Guell's friend and lawyer Martí TriasDomènech. You'd be surprised to know, that even during its developmental phase, the park was among the most-loved attractions in the town.
