Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary

In accordance with the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, the Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary of Chhattisgarh was established in the year 1975. Spread across an area of 551.55 square kilometres, the area around this wildlife sanctuary is mostly hilly. The altitude here varies from 200 to 1000 meters above the sea level. Here, the vegetation comprises of bamboo, saja and bija. If you move towards the higher altitudes, you’ll come across other species of vegetation too.

It has a rich flora and fauna. You can find evergreen sal forests as well as the mixed forests of diverse qualities in the sanctuary.

Important species of animals that are found here include spotted dear, deer, gazelle and chinkara. One of the must visit attractions in Chhattisgarh is the Udanti Wildlife Sanctuary. The name of the sanctuary Udanti is taken from the River Udanti. This wildlife sanctuary was mainly set up to preserve the wild buffaloes of the region. Spread over an area of 247.59 Sq. Kms, it was listed as one of the Wildlife Sanctuaries in Chhattisgarh in the year 1983 under the Wild Life Protection Act of 1972.
