Nestled in the core of North East India lies a beautiful realm of nature known as Manas National Park. Lodged in Assam, right at the foothills of the Bhutan Himalayas, Manas is one of the finest wildlife and biosphere reserves in the country. The park owes its name to the river Manas which originates from Bhutan, and ribbons through the park. Born with an aim to protect and preserve the Bengal tigers and elephants, it has also earned the title of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 1985.

Spanning roughly 500 sq.km., the landscape of Manas is a unique weave of the Terra and Bhabhar grasslands which is home to a diversified family of flora and fauna. In fact, the last of the world’s Pygmy Hogs are seen only here, in Manas. The deciduous forests of Manas are colonised by beautiful trees like Oxi, Khaled, Simul and Gamari.

You can book our 7 Days Wildlife Adventure Tour at Rs. 19,700/- only and enjoy your North East wildlife safari.

Manas has about 10 different titles to it and lives up to each of them. Away from the bustling city streets, Manas gives you an opportunity to unwind and relax in the laps of Mother Nature, and with a backdrop of the Eastern Himalayas looming over you. Being one of the lesser knowns, and least explore biosphere reserves in India, Manas National Park promises you an experience of a lifetime.

Types of Safari in Manas National Park

01

Elephant Safari

Send Enquiry

There’s hardly anything else that compares to the experience of exploring the hearts of Manas National Park on the back of an elephant. The park houses a good number of elephants, which makes them an ideal choice for a ride.

You may experience some discomfort or awkwardness for the first few minutes, but it completely washes away as the beautiful forest's trails begin to unfold before you. The pace of your journey is quite slow, which only gives you more time to observe and explore, unlike jeep safaris.

The highlight of elephant safaris is that you get to wander into areas that are restricted to cars. These are the areas where a lot of wildlife resides, upping your chances of spotting them. Though an elephant safari is an unmatched experience, it is advisable that you ensure that the elephants are well cared for, and not abused in any way.

Best time for Tiger Sighting

Send Enquiry

The intention of preservation and safeguarding of tigers that Manas National Park was born from has earned it the privilege of being a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Besides being a prominent elephant and tigers sanctuary, the park is also a recognised Biosphere Reserve.

The best time for tiger spotting at Manas is during summer, i.e., the months of March and April, when more and more animals leave out their hiding spaces in search of water sources. This means your chances of spotting tigers and other wild fauna increase considerably. May is also a great season for tiger spotting, but the park shuts down partially. Moreover, the elephant grasses are deliberately burned down during the summers, in order to mitigate the risk of forest fires.

If the wildlife part of the national park is what lures you in, try for a summer visit, as tourism is less active (since everyone usually prefers winters), leaving you more chances to spot tigers. During winters though, you will see that herds of bird watchers flock here seeking a few glimpses of the most elusive and exotic avian species.

Best Time to Visit Manas National Park

Send Enquiry
The best season to visit Manas National Park would be winters - November to April when the greenery and floral beauty is in full bloom, and the chances of spotting wild animals are maximum. Jeep and elephant rides are more enjoyable and fruitful in winters. Summers are usually sultry, and the park is open only partially in May, then shuts down again.

During monsoons, especially from June to September, the park remains completely shut due to heavy rainfall (North East India receives the highest amount of rainfall every year). It opens up partially in October and receives the highest amount of tourists between November and April.

During winters, the park is open every day. Throughout the year, tourists can enter the park only during the daytime. But the exact opening and closing hours of the park vary according to the time of sunrise and sunset every season. During the winters, the park allows visitors only till 04:30 PM to 05:30 PM, depending on the weather.

  5. Throughout your visit/stay, make sure to leave behind no traces. Do not leave behind anything you may have carried inside, and strictly do not litter.

  6. Avoid visiting the park in monsoons, as the trails are muddy and slippery. Recipe for disaster.

  7. If you’re in it for the wildlife part, remember that summers are your best best. Try visiting Manas during March or April for maximum sightings.

To revel in the beauty of the north east, there is nothing like an Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh package that will ensure you make the most of a serene chance to view the stunning locations. We booked our trip with Thrillophilia and headed off to see many fantastic places like the Bomdila, Tawang Monastery, Sela Pass, Dirang Orchid Center and so many more. We gorged on the most delicious breakfasts and spent our nights in the most hygienic hotels. I must admit that had I not booked my tours with Thrillophilia I probably would have never enjoyed such a beautiful trip that intelligently includes visit to all the major locations in just 9 days.

Generally, I and our group of 4 friends make our own travel plans. But, this time, we decided to go ahead with Thrillophilia as we had a 9-day tour to the northeast. Also, we had to ensure safety with the corona restrictions in place. If I had to summarize the trip in one sentence then I would say that I relished the beauty of every major location with unparalleled service experience from the Thrillophilia team. Right from our arrival at Guwahati to our stays at Bhalukpong, Shillong, and Dirang, everything was beyond perfect.
