Interspersed with ancient temples, the town is home to one of the oldest temples since time immemorial known as Mahabaleshwar, enshrined with Lord Shiva. The town is about 59 km from Karwar, 483 km from Bengaluru, and 238 km from Mangalore.

The place is surrounded by unruffled atmosphere and is eco-friendly. Surrounded by foliage and lush greenery, you can find elephants grazing, and spot other birds and wild animals.

This reserve also has animal care centre which takes take of their health and breeding problems. Injured animals are treated at this centre. This reserve has natural waters coming from Moyar, Nugu, and Kabini rivers.You can go on bird watching tours and take wildlife safaris at this reserve. You can also find a forest of well-preserved sandalwood trees in this reserve. August to November is the best time to visit the reserve as the climate is cool. The safaris ride is only for duration of 45 minutes, strictly. There are very few places to see at this reserve.

KSRTC, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation, runs several buses from Bangalore, including Hitech and night services. Shimoga is around 274 km (170 mi) by road from Bangalore. From coastal side, Shimoga is accessible by bus or car. This route passes through Agumbe Ghat or Balebare Ghat roads. Mangalore, Sringeri, Dharmasthala, Udupi, Hubli are connected by Road to this city. Shimoga is better connected with roads from all directions and as such, it is an important bus junction.
