This exhilarating trekking adventure in Bhutan takes you to the base camp of Mount Jomolhari – one of the most celebrated Himalayan mountains in the country
It is a challenging trek, not recommended for seasoned trekkers, and good mental and physical preparation is suggested well before participation
Participants are required to cover long distances including steep climbs on trek to Jomolhari

Drukgyel Dzong is the starting point of the trail that runs along Paro Chhu and passes through sweeping meadows, thick pine forests, paddy fields, and remote traditional villages of Bhutan
After covering this 115 km long trail, you reach the ending point of the trek, Dodena
About Jomolhari:
Jomolhari, also spelled as Chomolhari, is a Himalayan mountain, bordering China, Bhutan and Tibet. Fondly called the Bride of Kanchenjunga, this mighty mountain rises to an elevation of over 24,000 feet.
Jomolhari Trek is a thrilling adventure in Bhutan that offers you a once in a lifetime opportunity to witness the beauty of this mountain up close from its base camp at Jangothang, which also happens to be one of the most picturesque campsites in the country.
Categorized as a challenging trek, this adventure, by all means, is an ultimate dose of thrill and a generously rewarding experience for anyone who is seeking some real action in the Bhutanese Himalayas. Over the span of 8 or 9 days, you will be surprised to see the variety of landscapes unfolding in front of you.
From rolling meadows decked with flower beds and dense blue pine forests of Jigme Dorji National Park to roaring stream of Paro Chhu and quaint villages with traditional atmosphere, the trekking expedition to Jomolhari will help you discover varied aspects of Bhutan and its distinctiveness.
You will be dropped at the starting point of the trek – Drukgyel Dzong at 2,580 metres
The trail runs along Paro Chhu and will take you through paddy fields and meadows
The distance you are required to cover today is 17 km which usually takes 4 to 5 hours
You will reach Gunitsawa Village
Your campsite is located near Gunitsawa Village at an altitude of 2,850 metres
The distance you are required to cover today is 22 km which usually takes 5 to 6 hours
Through river valley, you will descend uphill to reach Jigme Dorji National Park
Then you will be required to descend to the campsite at Thangthangkha
Located at an altitude of 3,610 metres, the campsite offers great views of Jomolhari
The distance you are required to cover today is 19 km which usually takes 5 to 6 hours
Today you will be trekking along Paro Chhu and will pass through quaint villages Takethang, Dangochang and Soe
Breathtaking views of high ridges and snow capped Himalayas await you after you cross an army outpost
Your campsite for the day will be the exquisite Jangothang, the base camp of Jomolhari, boasting an elevation of 4,080 metres
The day is reserved for acclimatization
You can indulge in short hike to Jomolhari glaciers or visit high altitude villages near the campsite
Take proper sleep and give your body the required rest for the strenuous climb the following day
At this point, you can either continue the expedition to trek further to Dodena or you can trek back to the starting point of your trek
You will be required to cover a distance of 18 km which usually takes 6 to 7 hours
The highest altitude will be 4,870 metres at Nyilila Pass offering panoramic views of Jomolhari, Jiche Drake, and Tserimgang
Lingzhi Dzong will be your campsite at 4,010 metres
You will be required to cover a distance of 22 km which usually takes 8 to 9 hours
Climb to Yelila Pass at an elevation of 4,930 metres
Views of Tserimgang and Masanggang will be the highlight
Campsite will be Shodu at 4,080 metres height
The distance you are required to cover is 16 km which usually takes 5 to 6 hours
You will pass through waterfalls and rhododendron forests
Reach the ruins of Borshong Dzong, your campsite will be close to it at a height of 3,710 metres
The distance you are required to cover is 15 km which usually takes 5 to 6 hours
You will be descending to Thimphu Chhu River Valley
Camp at a beautiful meadow at an elevation of 3,320 metres
Walk through the forested area of Jigme Dorji National Park and exit it
You will be transferred to your hotel

The most recommended seasons for indulging in Jomolhari Trek are spring and autumn as the probability of rainfall is minimal and you can enjoy unhindered views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks under the clear skies.
If you are opting for spring, you can do this trek anytime between mid-March and mid-May before the arrival of rainy season. Whereas, if it is autumn that you choose, you can do this trek during the months of September and October.
The climate throughout the trek is essentially cold, varying to large degrees according to the altitude and time of the day. While the sunlight increases the temperature during the day, the temperature starts to drop after the sunset and reaches sub zero levels at night. In the same manner, the higher you go, the colder it gets.
So, it is safe to assume that regardless of the time of the year, the nights feature bone-chilling temperatures in the higher reaches like in Jangothang. Moreover, the weather of Bhutan is unpredictable, so it is advisable to go prepared for rains no matter what month you are choosing.
Jomolhari Trek is categorized as a moderately to difficult trek. Since this challenging adventure involves long hikes and unnerving stretches, that too on altitudes higher than 4,000 metre, and is definitely not suitable for first timers or people lacking good mental and physical fitness.
Even if you are an experienced trekker, it is recommended that you indulge in a fitness regime before participating in the trek.
As it is a challenging trek with various stretched of quick altitude gain and steep climbs, fairly high level of physical fitness is expected from the participants to trek to Jomolhari.
You may need the following clothing and equipments to trek to Jomolhari:

Yes and No. If you have a good level of fitness, you follow the instructions of the guide, and you are careful as you tread, the trek is certainly safe to do.
Or else, the trek is not so safe as it is taxing on your mind and body, and involves extremely long walks and climbs on altitudes over 4000 metres.
The difficulty level of Jomolhari Trek is Moderate to Challenging. In some parts, there are even terrains that require easy walks.
While there are also some daunting stretches that will test your mettle and you will be required to put the strength of your body and mind together to cover the steep climbs.
The presence of snow on the trek is purely a matter of the season. If you indulge in this trek during March, the chances of coming across snow from the winter are maximum.
On the other hand, you may also get lucky to witness early snow during late October or November as this is a high altitude trek.
Besides, snow capped peaks of Jomolhari and other prominent Himalayan peaks are always there to keep you hooked.
