Chittorgarh city is located in the southern part of Rajasthan on the Berach River. It is about 112 km from Udaipur and 182 km from Ajmer. The city of Chittorgarh once served as the capital city of the Sisodia clan the Mewar Rajputs. Now it is the administrative city of the Chittorgarh District. The city is famous for its tourism, culture and heritage values.

1. Chittorgarh Fort: The Chittorgarh Fort is one of the largest forts in India and a visit to Chittorgarh city is incomplete without a visit to this fort. This Fort is also famous as the Water Fort of Chittorgarh as it has over 84 different water bodies scattered all over the Fort. Standing on a hilltop and covering 700 acres of land, this imposing structure houses several other attractions of Chittorgarh City.

2. Padmini Palace: Located within the Chittorgarh Fort, Padmini Palace is a historical monument and this is where Queen Padmini lived after her marriage with Rawal Ratan Singh.

The Palace stands as a symbol of the great sacrifice Rani Padmini made when the Fort was attacked by the Sultan of Delhi, Ala-ud-din Khilji. The Palace itself is a white three-storeyed building with simple architecture and surrounded by a water body popularly known as the Lotus Pool.

3. Gaumukh Kund: Gaumukh Kund is also known as the Tirth Raj of Chittorgarh because this is where most pilgrims visit at the end of their return journey. The place got its name from the mouth-shaped point at the end from where the water flows. Gaumukh Kund is located on the western part of the Chittorgarh Fort and there are lots of fishes in the water which are regularly fed by the visitors.

4. Sita Mata Wildlife Sanctuary: Sita Mata Wildlife Sanctuary is a dense forest of thick deciduous trees such as Rudraksha, Gulmohar, Sindoor, Bamboo, Bel, etc. There is also quite a large number of medicinal herbs found in the region out of which 17 are endangered species.

There are several rivers that flow through this sanctuary ensuring a good water supply for the flora and fauna in the forest. There are a number of wild animals, reptiles and birds that can be found in this forest. The sanctuary is a birdwatcher’s paradise with birds like egrets, herons, black-winged stilt, cotton teal etc making this sanctuary their home.

5. Fateh Prakash Palace: The Fateh Prakash Palace In Chittorgarh built by Maharana Fateh Singh, showcases the best part of the Rajput architecture. The engravings on the pillars and corridors are some of the finest examples of the art of that era. Part of the Palace has been converted into a museum and it is open to the public. The main attractions in the Palace are the collection of weapons of war, ancient stone statues and woodcrafts, collection of crystal artefacts, antique furniture and lots more.

6. Bassi Wildlife Sanctuary: Located just 5 km away from Bassi Fort Palace, the Bassi Wildlife Sanctuary covers a massive area of over 150 square km. The Sanctuary is home to several wild animals such as cheetah, jackals, hyenas, four-horned antelopes, wild boar, langurs, etc.  Birds such as peacocks, hawks, eagles, whistling ducks, etc have also made this sanctuary their home.

7. Vijay Stambh: Vijay Stambh is located within the walls of the Chittorgarh Fort and it was built by Rana Kumbha to signify his victory over the Sultan of Mewar. The tower is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and it has several intricately carved sculptures of Hindu Gods and Goddesses as well as beautiful engravings on the pillars and arches. There are nine floors in the Vijay Stambh and each comes with its own balcony which faces outwards.

8. Ratan Singh Palace: Ratan Singh Palace is one of the most popular attractions in Chittorgarh for its architectural splendour and historical significance. Although most parts of the Palace are in ruins it still retains its regal stature.

The major attraction of the Palace is its east-facing entrance which has a gigantic archway with an ornate canopy on top. The upper levels on the eastern side have beautiful jharokhas and balconies that still have its charm and beauty intact.

9. Sanwariyaji Temple: The Sanwariyaji Temples are dedicated to the Dark Krishna and it is located along the Chittorgarh to Udaipur Highway. The magnificent temple complex is built in unique pink sandstone and it is resplendent with beautiful artworks, engravings, paintings and inscriptions. The deity is made of black stone and is also known as Shri Sanwariaji Seth and it holds great significance for traders and merchants.

1. Go animal spotting at Bassi Wildlife Sanctuary: Bassi Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a variety of wildlife such as Panther, spotted Deer, Jackals, Crocodiles, Civet, Hyena, Porcupine, Blue Bull, Wild Boar and several others.

The wildlife sanctuary is a great place to practice wildlife photography or go bird watching. Jeep safaris are available for tourists.
