Old Dubai Bastakia Overview

A traditional, heritage centre or district is Al Bastakiya in Dubai, UAE. Its original name is Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. The construction of the district happened in 1890 and then the district was able to house around 60 housing units separated by narrow and winding lanes. In the year of 1980, the district was destroyed to the maximum in order to give space for building new office complex.

The remaining housing units were turned to be warehouses and places for foreign labourers to stay. Rayner Otter, a renowned British architect has renovated his house in the district and he sought the help of Prince Charles to make the district a heritage center and preserve it from further demolition. In 2005, Dubai Municipality started a project to restore the old localities and lanes in the district.

Such buildings include Sheikh Mohammed Building for Cultural Understanding, Dubai Museum, Majlis Gallery, Ostra- the gallery showcasing the contemporary art and sculpture, Arabian Tea House- a popular courtyard and XVA- a small art house and gallery.

Location: The district is located at Hamriya Bur Dubai, Dubai, UAE. If you take the Al Satwa Road, you can reach the district in approximately 20 minutes and a drive of 10 kms would be there.

Timing: The district will be open on all days from 09:00 am to 06:00 pm to the public and people spend around 2 hours approximately inside.
