Moscow Zoo Overview
Founded in the year 1864 by professor biologists K.F. Rulje S.A. Usov and A.P. Bogdanov, the Moscow Zoo is the largest zoo in Russia. Spread over an area of about 21.5 hectares, it houses a large collection of northern animals and exotic species. The zoo was declared the property of the Soviet Russia in the year 1919 after being privately owned for about 55 years.

The zoo has small unbarred enclosures as well as large paddocks for herds. One of the interesting facts about this zoo is that it remained open during the second world war. At the present time, it has got more than 3000 specimens of around 550 species.
